A deal has been reached to secure the future of shipbuilder Harland and Wolff, saving hundreds of jobs across its Scottish yards. The Belfast-based company, with shipyards in Methil, Fife, and Arnish, Isle of Lewis, was placed into administration in September for the second time in five years. Spanish state-owned business Navantia has stepped in to acquire the firm, ensuring the continuation of operations.
Harland and Wolff, famous for its role in building the Titanic, is part of a consortium that secured a significant contract to construct new fleet solid support ships for the Royal Navy. Navantia UK, the main contractor on the project, will oversee the deal, subject to regulatory approval, safeguarding a total of 1,000 jobs across all four shipyards, including close to 400 jobs at the Scottish sites.
The agreement includes provisions to maintain the existing terms and conditions for workers. Additionally, the British government has agreed to amend the Fleet Solid Support (FSS) Programme contract with Navantia to enable the company to fulfill its obligations and complete the construction of all three Navy ships.
