The local authority initially informed residents that bins scheduled for collection on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day would still be emptied over the following weekend. However, the council later revised the schedule, stating that collections would be postponed until at least January 8.
According to reports, none of the waste collection workers offered to work during the festive season, leading to what the council referred to as “workforce resource challenges.” The council traditionally relies on staff volunteers to help clear the backlog of waste during the busy holiday period. This year, however, no employees stepped forward to work extra days, prompting the delay in bin collections.
Despite efforts to notify residents of the revised collection dates by placing tags on their bins, the decision has sparked criticism on social media. Many residents expressed frustration over the abrupt change, questioning the reasons for the delay and highlighting the inconvenience caused by the extended wait for bin collections.
In response to the situation, a spokesperson for West Dunbartonshire Council stated, “As is normal over the festive period, we seek volunteers to work additional days in order to clear the backlog from public holidays. This year, no volunteers have come forward and therefore it is not possible to have collections on additional days.”

Residents affected by the delayed bin collections have been advised to refer to the revised schedule for their new collection dates, with bins originally due for pickup on Christmas Day now expected to be emptied on January 8. Similarly, bins set for collection on Boxing Day will now be serviced on January 9, while those scheduled for January 1 and 2 will be uplifted on January 15 and 16, respectively.
