Scottish Liberal Democrat Leader To Campaign for Kamala Harris in Pivotal US Swing State
The leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, Alex Cole-Hamilton, is set to travel to the United States this month to campaign for Kamala Harris in a crucial swing state. Cole-Hamilton will be knocking on doors in the city of Scranton to support the Democratic Vice President in what he describes as the “most important” election in global history. Recent polls indicate that Harris and former President Donald Trump are in a tightly contested presidential race, with Pennsylvania being a key battleground state.
Following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race, Harris stepped in as the Democratic candidate, further intensifying the competition. Cole-Hamilton, along with three other Liberal Democrat friends, will be flying out to support Harris, staying with his sister who resides an hour north of Scranton in upstate New York. Describing the significance of this election, he stated, “This feels like one of the most important elections, not just in American history, but global history.”
Highlighting the high stakes of the election, particularly in light of Trump’s support for Russian President Vladimir Putin, Cole-Hamilton emphasised the importance of the outcome for global affairs. He expressed concerns over Trump’s relationship with Putin and its potential implications for international alliances such as NATO. By actively engaging in campaign activities, Cole-Hamilton aims to contribute his efforts towards what he perceives as a critical moment in shaping future geopolitical dynamics.
In response to potential criticism regarding his involvement in another country’s election, Cole-Hamilton cited his previous experience campaigning for Barack Obama in 2008 and emphasized that his participation is within the bounds of permissible engagement. Utilising his free time during the Holyrood recess, he views the opportunity to interact with voters and understand their perspectives as a meaningful endeavour. By engaging in on-the-ground campaigning, Cole-Hamilton seeks to connect with voters and contribute to the democratic process while advocating for the candidate he believes aligns with his values.
As the campaign heats up in the United States, Cole-Hamilton’s involvement underscores the interconnectedness of global politics and the active participation of political leaders beyond their immediate constituencies. With the US presidential election looming, the engagement of international figures like Cole-Hamilton reflects the significance of cross-border collaborations and the shared impacts of political decisions on a global scale.
