Two nurses from NHS Forth Valley have embarked on a remarkable journey to raise awareness for Organ and Tissue Donation Week 2024 by climbing Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain. May Cooper and Caroline Gallier, part of the Scotland Organ Donation Services team at Forth Valley Royal Hospital, joined families of donor heroes and transplant recipients in a simultaneous summit of six famous peaks across the country.
The challenge, which took place on September 27, saw participants carrying photographs of their loved ones to mark Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week. May Cooper expressed that the experience was a great way to unite with families affected by organ donation while Caroline Gallier shared that it was a tremendous day spent raising awareness. The event aimed to highlight the importance of organ donation for the many patients awaiting transplants, including over 600 individuals in Scotland, particularly in the Forth Valley area.
In the NHS Forth Valley region, over half of the population has registered their donation decision, with 52% opting in and 3.3% choosing to opt out. By registering as an organ donor, individuals have the potential to save several lives of seriously ill patients. Organ Donation Scotland provides information on how to register and make a difference in supporting this vital cause.
The national campaign to ‘Turn the Peaks Pink’ exemplifies the collective effort needed to address the ongoing organ shortage and emphasises the significance of organ and tissue donation for individuals in need. As the impact of organ donation resonates with many across Scotland, events like this bring communities together to promote life-saving initiatives and raise awareness on a national scale.
The climb to the mountain summits symbolises the uphill battle faced by patients waiting for organs, while also signifying the hope and unity that organ donation can bring to individuals and families in need. By participating in activities like ‘Turn the Peaks Pink’, communities contribute to a culture of support and compassion that can help save lives and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those awaiting organ transplants.
