Bulldozers have begun demolishing the infamous Bellgrove Hotel in Glasgow where homeless individuals once lived in appalling conditions. The move comes as part of ongoing efforts to transform the site into new accommodation by Glasgow City Council in collaboration with Wheatley Homes Glasgow.
The decision to dispose of the land to Wheatley Homes Glasgow was made to pave the way for the regeneration of the Gallowgate area, where the Bellgrove Hotel is located. The hotel had been the subject of a campaign to shut it down due to reports of homeless residents enduring deplorable living conditions, including living in unsanitary environments.
Described as resembling “a Soviet gulag” and Dickensian poorhouses, the hotel came under scrutiny after a 2014 investigation by the Daily Record highlighted the dire situation faced by its occupants. It was revealed that the owners of the hostel were making substantial profits from taxpayers, raising concerns about the lack of regulation in place.
Following the investigation, Glasgow MSP John Mason led efforts to address the situation, urging better oversight of the hostel to improve the living conditions of its residents. Wheatley Group’s redevelopment plans for the site include the construction of 70 homes, with a portion of the hotel slated for demolition due to structural constraints.
The new housing units are intended for “mid-market rent,” catering to individuals earning between £21,000 and £40,000 annually. This initiative forms part of broader plans to revitalise the Gallowgate area, with a focus on repurposing brownfield land for residential use.
Originally built in the 1930s to provide accommodation for working men, the B-listed Bellgrove Hotel will soon make way for modern housing solutions aimed at addressing the city’s housing needs. The redevelopment project signifies a significant step towards improving living conditions and offering affordable housing options to the community.
