Angela Rayner’s recent trip to an Ibiza nightclub has been revealed as a £836 freebie, according to the latest register of MPs’ financial interests. The deputy prime minister enjoyed hospitality worth hundreds of pounds for a visit to the DJ booth at nightclub Hi Ibiza, which was paid for by Ayita LLC, the agent of DJ Fisher. During the event on 29 August, Rayner was seen dancing with Fisher and Denise Van Outen in footage that circulated on social media.
Although Rayner received the complimentary entry to the nightclub, she did pay for her own flights and accommodation during the four-day visit. In the video, she can be seen dancing and jumping behind DJ decks alongside Fisher and Van Outen while smoke cannons went off in the venue. The footage posted on Van Outen’s Instagram described the event as a “surprise DJ booth rave up” with the deputy prime minister energetically joining in the fun.
Following some criticism over the event, Rayner defended her actions, stating to Sky News that she takes her job seriously but also enjoys downtime. She emphasised that as a working-class individual, she appreciates the chance to unwind and have a dance. This revelation comes at a time when the leader of Rayner’s party, Sir Keir Starmer, had to repay over £6,000 worth of gifts and hospitality received since taking office.
The Conservative party has accused Sir Keir of only being transparent when under pressure and questioned why other senior government officials, such as Rayner, have not repaid similar gifts. With ongoing criticism over accepting considerable gifts from donors, Sir Keir has pledged to reform the rules on ministerial hospitality to ensure greater transparency. Meanwhile, Labour peer Lord Waheed Alli is under investigation for potential non-registration of interests, which could breach the members’ code of conduct.
Rayner’s Ibiza escapade has brought attention to the issue of ministerial donations and prompted discussions around transparency and accountability in government. As the debate continues, there is growing pressure on politicians to uphold ethical standards and ensure that their actions align with public expectations.
