Doctor Mark Chavez, one of the medical professionals charged in connection to the tragic death of Friends star Matthew Perry, has pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute the surgical anesthetic ketamine. The guilty plea was entered by Dr. Chavez, 54, in a federal court in Los Angeles on Wednesday, following a plea agreement signed with prosecutors in August. This makes him the third person to admit guilt in the aftermath of the Canadian actor’s fatal overdose last year.
The plea deal offered to Dr. Chavez and two others involved includes lesser charges in exchange for their cooperation as authorities aim to hold two other individuals accountable for Perry’s death. These individuals are another doctor and an alleged dealer referred to as the “ketamine queen” of Los Angeles. Dr. Chavez, from San Diego, had been out on bond under certain conditions, such as surrendering his medical license and passport, prior to entering his guilty plea.
Matthew Perry passed away at the age of 54 in October last year after a fatal overdose of ketamine, a drug sometimes used to treat depression. The actor’s untimely death led to an extensive seven-month investigation by LA authorities, resulting in the arrest of Dr. Chavez, Dr. Salvador Plasencia, and Jasveen Sangha, the alleged Hollywood drug dealer known as “the ketamine queen.” Plasencia is accused of selling ketamine to Perry before his passing, while Sangha is believed to have provided the lethal dose of ketamine. Both have pleaded not guilty and await trial.
Additionally, Perry’s assistant and an acquaintance confessed to aiding the actor in obtaining and using ketamine, further implicating individuals in the case. Dr. Chavez admitted in his plea agreement that he sourced ketamine from his former clinic and a wholesale distributor through a fraudulent prescription. His lawyer, Matthew Binninger, stated in August that Dr. Chavez is deeply remorseful and is striving to make amends for the tragedy.
Following the guilty plea, Dr. Chavez faces a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison. Perry’s death was determined by the medical examiner to be primarily caused by ketamine use. The actor, known for his role as Chandler Bing in the beloved sitcom Friends, had struggled with addiction for years. His passing shed light on the dangers of substance abuse and highlighted the need for vigilance and support in battling addiction issues.
