Edinburgh Man Faces Rare Disease Diagnosis After Skull-Exploding Headaches
A Scottish father’s ordeal with debilitating headaches led to a shocking diagnosis of kidney failure due to a rare disease. Chris Madden, a 44-year-old electrical engineer from Edinburgh, initially experienced excruciatingly painful headaches that felt like his skull was about to explode. Despite seven months of telephone appointments during the Covid-19 pandemic, it wasn’t until he had a face-to-face GP appointment that extremely high blood pressure was detected.
In August 2020, Chris was rushed to the Royal Infirmary, where he received the devastating news that his kidneys were only functioning at four percent. The cause of his kidney failure was IgA nephropathy, a disease where a germ-fighting protein, immunoglobulin A (IgA), accumulates in the kidneys, leading to a loss of function. Due to his worsening symptoms, such as extreme fatigue, Chris had to start dialysis immediately while awaiting a potential kidney transplant.
Receiving the life-changing news of a living donor willing to donate a kidney on June 24, 2021, brought immense relief and joy to Chris. Following a successful transplant, he was able to resume activities he once took for granted, such as spending time with his family and running. He also connected with the Scotland Transplant Team, a group of transplant recipients who come together monthly to support each other and promote organ donation awareness.
Looking ahead to the European Transplant Football Championship in Oxford in April 2025, Chris is part of a dedicated team aiming to raise funds to cover travel and accommodation expenses for the competition. Despite the challenges he faced with his health, Chris remains grateful for the gift of life he received from a selfless donor, highlighting the importance of organ donation in transforming lives.
