Watch live: Smoke over Beirut as at least six dead in Israeli airstrike on Lebanon

Smoke billows over Beirut as Israeli airstrike in Lebanon leaves at least six dead

The tense situation in the Middle East escalated on Thursday as smoke filled the skies over Beirut following an Israeli airstrike on Lebanon. The strike, close to Lebanon’s parliament, resulted in a tragic loss of life, with at least six people killed and seven others injured.

This incident comes in the wake of Israel’s first military casualties during their ground invasion of southern Lebanon. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have reported the deaths of at least eight soldiers in fierce clashes with the militant group Hezbollah.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated his determination to defeat what he described as Iran’s “Axis of Evil”. He stated, “We are in the midst of a challenging war… together, with the help of God, we will emerge victorious.”

The escalation of hostilities has raised concerns about the potential for further violence in the region. Israel’s army chief, Herzi Halevi, has affirmed that Israel will retaliate. He emphasised the country’s capability to target and strike key locations with precision and strength, asserting that no region in the Middle East is beyond their reach.

As tensions continue to mount in the region, the international community remains on high alert, closely monitoring the situation in the Middle East. The ongoing clashes between Israel and militant groups have heightened fears of a broader conflict, underscoring the urgent need for diplomatic intervention to prevent further bloodshed and instability in the region.

The world watches with bated breath as the situation unfolds in the Middle East, hoping for a swift resolution to the escalating violence and a return to peace and stability in the region.
