Education inspectors have concluded their latest visit to Old Monkland Primary School and Nursery in Coatbridge, informing families that no follow-up action is necessary. The findings by watchdog Education Scotland were shared with parents and carers of children attending the school and nursery following inspections conducted in June.
Commendations were given to the head teacher for offering strong and compassionate support to both the staff and the school community, especially during a time of recent changes. The inspectors noted that the children at the school were polite, well-behaved, and actively engaged in their learning. Meanwhile, those in the nursery were reported to be enjoying their experiences and forming friendships.
The inspectors also highlighted the nurturing environment within both the school and nursery, with a focus on promoting positive attitudes towards learning and fostering strong relationships between pupils and staff. Recommendations for improvement were discussed with the head teacher and North Lanarkshire Council, including a more responsive approach to nursery children’s interests and enhancements in monitoring the children’s progress.
Despite overall satisfactory and adequate ratings for the nursery and primary school, respectively, by Education Scotland and the Care Inspectorate, areas for development were identified. These included the need for further measures to track children’s progress effectively and to enhance systems for monitoring progress in both settings.
While Education Scotland believes no further visits are necessary following this inspection, the Care Inspectorate has not ruled out potential additional checks to ensure the implementation of recommendations related to staff training and safety monitoring. The collaborative efforts between the school, nursery, inspectors, and local council underscore a commitment to providing quality education and support for the children in Coatbridge.
