Massive solar flare triggers blackout over Pacific

A massive solar flare has caused a significant blackout over parts of the Pacific, including Hawaii. The solar flare, classified as the second strongest of the year, emerged from a rapidly growing sunspot known as AR3842 on Monday and sent intense charged particles towards Earth. This strong X7 category flare resulted in a temporary radio blackout over Hawaii as reported by SpaceWeather.com.

According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the X7.1 flare is the second most powerful flare of Solar Cycle 25, surpassed only by an X8.7 flare that occurred earlier in the year. Solar flares occur when the Sun’s magnetic field snaps and reconnects, typically around sunspots, propelling particles into space like a massive catapult. Flares are classified by strength, ranging from B-class (the smallest) to C, M, and X-class (the largest), with further numerical refinement within each class.

The recent solar flare could lead to a “minor-strong” disruption of Earth’s magnetic field, with NOAA issuing “G1-G3 (Minor-Strong) Geomagnetic Storm Watches” from 3-5 October in anticipation of the associated coronal mass ejection (CME). Forecasters project a strong G3-class geomagnetic storm, with the most significant impact expected on Friday. The Sun is presently at the peak of its 11-year activity cycle, characterised by fluctuating sunspot numbers and increased solar activity.

During the Solar Maximum period, which is currently underway, solar flares, energetic particles, and plasma emissions intensify. The effects of flares are swiftly felt in the Earth’s upper atmosphere, potentially affecting communication and navigation systems like GPS. Charged particles can reach Earth within minutes to hours, posing risks to spacecraft systems and astronauts. CMEs, such as the one expected this week, may arrive in 30-72 hours, causing magnetic field disturbances, auroras, and disruptions to satellites and power grids.

NOAA predicts manageable voltage fluctuations in power systems and potential aurora displays extending from Pennsylvania to Iowa to Oregon due to the upcoming CME.
