A nursery worker in Scotland who triggered an emergency rescue operation with a hoax call has managed to avoid a jail sentence. Clair Frost, aged 35, made a false alarm from a landline at Killin Nursery School in Perthshire, leading to a full-scale search and rescue mission, which even included her own husband, a retained firefighter.
Frost’s call reported seeing an overturned kayak at the “head of the lock” at Loch Tay, mispronouncing the Scottish word loch. The police, fire services, and paramedics were dispatched to the scene, with a helicopter also involved in the search. Fortunately, after six hours, it was realized that the call was a hoax, leading to the stand down of the operation.
Despite denying making the call, Frost’s voice was identified by colleagues and a police officer who had known her for years. At the sentencing at Stirling Sheriff Court, Frost, who still maintains her innocence, was found guilty of making the false call. Her defence solicitor mentioned her anxiety and receiving sick pay from work as mitigating factors.
Although initially warned of a possible jail term, the sheriff explained that the law only allowed a maximum prison sentence of three months for the offence. Therefore, Frost was fined £1,040. The sheriff emphasized the seriousness of the matter due to its significant impact on public safety and the public purse.
During the trial, it was revealed that the call was traced to a phone at the nursery where Frost worked. Despite her denial, evidence including witness statements and her presence in the room at the time of the call led to her arrest. Frost, an experienced nursery worker, was given the option to pay the fine in instalments.
Detective Constable Gavin Dingwall, who conducted the police interview, expressed confusion over Frost’s motives for the hoax call. The incident not only wasted valuable emergency resources but also caused personal distress to those involved in the search operation.
The incident serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of making false emergency calls and the importance of upholding the law to protect public safety. Through this incident, the nursery worker faced legal consequences and a financial penalty for her actions.
