A Scottish toddler faced a devastating cancer diagnosis after doctors initially suspected constipation. Two-year-old Tommy Paul Quinn, residing near Glasgow in Bishopbriggs, began feeling unwell following a family holiday in January. Nicole, 37, and David, 41, noticed his symptoms worsen after consuming specific foods. Initially, they attributed it to a potential food allergy, but as Tommy struggled to sleep and exhibited unusual behaviour, concerns grew.
Nicole, a nurse, grew alarmed when Tommy showed signs of lethargy and disinterest in activities during a family gathering. Suspecting something was amiss, they sought medical attention at Glasgow Children’s Hospital. Initially, a doctor speculated it could be constipation after examining Tommy’s stomach. However, further investigations revealed a grim reality.
Following tests and an ultrasound scan, it was determined that Tommy had Stage 4 High-Risk Neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive childhood cancer with a survival rate of 50%. The young boy had a tumour on his adrenal gland, with secondary effects on his lymph nodes, thorax, and spinal cord. Despite the grim diagnosis, Tommy displayed remarkable resilience and spirit, continuing to be his playful self throughout treatment.
Nicole expressed both shock and determination in facing Tommy’s diagnosis, emphasising his positive attitude amidst the challenging circumstances. The family remains hopeful as Tommy undergoes 18 months of treatment to achieve remission. However, they acknowledge the potential risks of relapse associated with High-Risk Neuroblastoma, highlighting the need for ongoing support.
To cover the costs of anticipated treatments, including potential travel for specialised care, the family initiated a fundraising campaign. The estimated expenses could reach £250,000, reflecting the critical nature of Tommy’s condition. Their optimistic outlook and proactive approach underscore their commitment to Tommy’s well-being and recovery.
