New affordable housing development in Helensburgh welcomes first residents

A new energy-efficient, affordable housing development in Helensburgh has been officially opened, welcoming its first residents. Constructed by The JR Group in partnership with Dunbritton Housing Association, the project offers 12 apartments available for social rent, accessible via East King Street. Funding from the Scottish Government’s Affordable Housing Supply Programme (AHSP) and Argyll and Bute Council’s Strategic Housing Fund, along with private funding from Dunbritton Housing Association, facilitated the construction, which began last summer.

Argyll and Bute Council’s declaration of a Housing Emergency in June 2023, followed by support from West Dunbartonshire and the Scottish Government, underlined the urgency for such developments. Sephton MacQuire, Chairperson of Dunbritton Housing Association, attended the completion to cut the ribbon and extend a warm welcome to the residents. MacQuire expressed his delight, highlighting the project’s collaboration with development consultants, financial backers, and The JR Group for delivering quality homes within the agreed timeline and budget.

The project’s realisation involved the expertise of various entities, including MAST Architects, G3 Consulting Engineers, NBM Construction Cost Consultants, and Macdonald & Cameron Ltd. Sandra Lindsay, Development Director at The JR Group, emphasised the importance of providing affordable housing in a time of great need, like in Helensburgh. Lindsay, pleased with the opportunity to witness the project’s completion, envisioned a promising partnership with Dunbritton Housing Association for future developments.

Dunbritton Housing Association, based in Dumbarton, extends its rented housing offerings across West Dunbartonshire and Argyll and Bute. This new housing development aligns with efforts to address the housing crisis and meet the growing demand for affordable accommodation in the region. The collaboration between various stakeholders and construction professionals underscores the commitment to providing quality, affordable homes to local communities.

The successful completion and opening of the Jeanie Deans development mark a significant milestone in addressing the housing needs in Helensburgh and reflects the dedication of all involved parties in delivering a vital community resource.
