Vietnam has publicly condemned China for reportedly assaulting 10 of its fishermen, damaging their fishing equipment, and confiscating around 4 tonnes of fish near the disputed Paracel Islands in the South China Sea. The incident was reported by the Vietnamese fishermen who were attacked by law enforcement personnel near the Chinese-controlled islands. The assault left three fishermen with broken limbs and others with various injuries, prompting them to seek medical attention upon returning to Quang Ngai province.
Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement blaming Chinese law enforcement for the assault, citing a serious violation of Vietnam’s sovereignty in the Paracel Islands, international law, and agreements to manage territorial disputes between the two countries. The Chinese officials have yet to respond to these allegations. In response to the incident, Vietnam lodged a protest and expressed alarm to the Chinese ambassador in Hanoi, demanding that Beijing respect its sovereignty, investigate the matter, and share information about the attack.
The South China Sea, a vital waterway for global trade amounting to about $5 trillion annually, has been a focal point of territorial disputes involving China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan. While the United States does not have territorial claims in the area, it has deployed military assets to assert freedom of navigation, which has drawn criticism from China. The fishermen, outnumbered and overpowered by the attackers, were forced to return to Vietnam after their gear and catch were seized. The attackers reportedly covered the fishermen with plastic sheets before leaving the scene, leaving behind a distressing aftermath.

China’s control over the islands dates back to 1974 when a naval conflict resulted in Beijing seizing them from Vietnam.
