A Motherwell dog owner made the difficult decision to put down her pocket bully dog, Tyson, after he attacked a man, resulting in a £350 fine for the owner, Agnieska Malarczyk, at Hamilton Sheriff Court. During the court proceedings, Sheriff John Hamilton expressed bewilderment at the ownership of “violent and aggressive” pocket bully dogs. The incident unfolded when a man interested in purchasing Tyson contacted Malarczyk through social media and visited her home in Motherwell.
Prosecutor Neil Thomson recounted the harrowing experience, stating that Tyson lashed out at the man, biting his thigh and tearing his trousers despite his attempts to fend off the attack. Shockingly, Malarczyk failed to control Tyson during the episode and showed disregard for the victim’s distress. The man eventually left without purchasing the dog, sustaining teeth marks and significant bruising from the encounter.
Following the attack on August 13 the previous year, Malarczyk had Tyson euthanized. In response to the case, Sheriff Hamilton questioned the choice to own such a breed given their tendency towards violence and aggression, emphasising the need for responsible ownership. Defence lawyer Ian Scott suggested that Tyson’s aggression stemmed from past mistreatment by a male owner, leading to a fear of men and subsequent hostility.
The troubling incident with Tyson comes amidst increased scrutiny on ownership of XL bully dogs, which now require certification and stringent controls in Scotland to prevent serious attacks. These regulations mandate the muzzling and leashing of XL bully dogs in public, prohibiting their breeding and sale. However, the legislation does not extend to pocket bully dogs, raising concerns about the potential risks associated with these breeds.
As discussions on dog ownership regulations continue, incidents like the one involving Tyson serve as stark reminders of the importance of responsible pet ownership to ensure the safety of both animals and the public. With public safety in mind, authorities are urging vigilance and adherence to existing regulations to prevent similar incidents and promote harmonious coexistence between pets and the community.
