Typhoon Krathon Hits Taiwan, Leaves Destruction in its Wake
Typhoon Krathon made a devastating impact on Taiwan, resulting in the loss of four lives and leaving tens of thousands without power. The storm, which was initially classified as a Category 4 typhoon, weakened before making landfall near Kaohsiung, a major port city in Taiwan. Despite its weakened state, Krathon caused widespread damage and brought the entire island to a standstill for two days.
Local media referred to Krathon as a “weird” storm due to its unusual behavior. The storm lingered near Taiwan’s coast for an extended period, moving slowly and making landfall on the populated and western coast of the island, an unexpected occurrence. Schools, offices, and shops were closed, and flights were cancelled as the typhoon hit the island.
Residents of Kaohsiung received emergency alerts urging them to seek shelter as the typhoon brought wind gusts exceeding 160 kmph and heavy rainfall to the region. Tragically, two individuals lost their lives in the eastern part of the island due to the extreme weather conditions caused by Typhoon Krathon. Fortunately, there were no major casualties reported in Kaohsiung, thanks to the preparedness of the residents.
To mitigate the impact of the storm, the government distributed sandbags, deployed water pumps, and had around 38,000 military troops ready to assist with disaster relief efforts. Approximately 10,000 people were evacuated from vulnerable areas, particularly in Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and Taitung. Despite these efforts, many areas remained flooded, with thousands of households without power.
The slow movement of Typhoon Krathon is indicative of a concerning trend in recent years, where storms stall and linger, leading to prolonged periods of rainfall and increased destruction. Scientists have linked this pattern to the climate crisis, with rising global temperatures supercharging storms and causing them to carry more moisture.
The aftermath of Typhoon Krathon serves as a stark reminder of the need for preparedness and resilience in the face of extreme weather events. As Taiwan continues to grapple with the impact of the storm, efforts to assist affected communities and bolster disaster response mechanisms will be crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of the island’s residents.
