**Investigation Launched Following Fatal Accident of Dairy Worker Near Stirling**
An investigation has been initiated following the tragic death of Alistair Blair, a 64-year-old dairy worker, who was killed in a hay bale accident at Graham’s The Family Dairy, located in Kippen, near Stirling. The probe will examine potential safety failings that may have contributed to his untimely death two years prior.
Mr Blair’s family expressed hope that the inquiry might offer some clarity and peace regarding the circumstances surrounding his accident. “Our family has been in turmoil since losing Dad, grappling with grief and a multitude of unanswered questions about the day he died,” his daughter, Lisa Blair, shared poignantly. “We sincerely hope this Fatal Accident Inquiry can finally shed light on what transpired and possibly safeguard other farm workers from suffering a similar fate.”
The fatal incident took place on November 4, 2024, when Mr Blair was reportedly struck by multiple hay bales that collapsed. These bales, each weighing approximately 250kg, were found to have caused fatal blunt force trauma to his chest, as confirmed in the death certificate. Despite immediate efforts by a colleague who attempted to perform CPR, Mr Blair could not be revived.
In the wake of the tragic event, Graham’s The Family Dairy has taken steps to support the family by covering the expenses for Mr Blair’s funeral. However, an initial investigation carried out by the Police and the Health and Safety Executive ruled out criminal charges against the farm. Nevertheless, the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) has mandated a Fatal Accident Inquiry to further investigate the incident and explore ways to enhance safety protocols for agricultural workers.
The first session of this inquiry is scheduled for December 11. Mairi Day, a partner at Digby Brown Solicitors who is representing the Blair family, stressed the tragic nature of the event, underscoring that it was both avoidable and profoundly affecting to all involved. “Although legal investigations are ongoing, our primary objective is to support the Blair family in uncovering the truth,” she stated.
As the inquiry approaches, the family holds onto the hope that vital lessons can be learned to prevent future accidents in the agricultural sector, thereby protecting those who work tirelessly to feed the nation.
This harrowing incident serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers inherent in agricultural work and the necessity for rigorous safety standards to ensure the wellbeing of every agricultural worker.
