The world of hairstyling has lost a true pioneer with the passing of John Frieda, the renowned celebrity stylist and ex-husband of Scottish singer Lulu, who has died at the age of 75. The news was announced via the official Instagram account of his namesake salon, where his family paid heartfelt tribute to him, describing him as a “true icon”.

Born Alan Howard Frieda in London in 1951, he launched his first salon at the young age of 25, the same year he married Lulu, who recently celebrated her 78th birthday. The couple welcomed one son, Jordan Frieda, in 1977 before separating in 1991 after fifteen years of marriage. Despite the end of their romantic relationship, they maintained a close friendship over the years. Frieda later married Frances Avery Agnelli in 2019.

Over his illustrious career, Frieda became a household name, famously known for his groundbreaking product, Frizz-Ease, which revolutionised hair care. He worked closely with numerous high-profile clients, including Diana, Princess of Wales, Madonna, Nicole Kidman, and Scarlett Johansson. Tributes from across the industry have poured in grieving the loss of someone described as a mentor and an icon.

A statement released by his family encapsulated the sentiment of many as it read: “It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that our dear John passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. His talent and passion touched so many, and his legacy will live on in every single one of us.”

Jo Wood, model and ex-wife of Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood, reminisced about her early encounters with Frieda at the salon, recalling his charm and talent. Frieda’s stepdaughter, Asia Agnelli Lagrange, took to social media to share cherished memories, expressing, “Today we lost the best man to ever exist.”

Frieda’s influence in the hairdressing industry extends far and wide, having created numerous innovative styles, including the iconic “Purdey” haircut for actress Joanna Lumley. He was also instrumental in his products that aided in the development of the modern hair care market.

Frieda leaves behind his beloved wife, four children, and two grandchildren. His legacy will surely endure, as mentioned by Cetera Lamb, creative director at Frieda’s London salon, who stated, “The industry has lost a true legend, a real maverick in hairdressing.”

John Frieda’s journey from a passionate young stylist to an industry leader serves as a testament to his dedication and creativity, and his impact will be felt for generations to come.
