### Neglect Leads to Ban for Dog Owner in Glasgow as SSPCA Rescues Two Suffering Canines

In a distressing case of animal neglect, two dogs, Berti, a French Bulldog, and Maggie, a German Shepherd, have been rescued from a life of suffering as their owner faces severe legal consequences. Thomas McLaren, the dogs’ owner, was handed a two-year ban from owning or keeping any animals after appearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court on 29 October. In addition to the ban, he was sentenced to 80 hours of unpaid community service for causing unnecessary suffering to the animals.

The dire situation came to light in April when the Scottish SPCA received a call expressing concerns about the well-being of the dogs at McLaren’s home in Glasgow. Upon arrival, Inspector Cannon found a severely emaciated Berti and an underweight Maggie, both in desperate need of care and sustenance. McLaren initially kept the door slightly ajar to prevent the dogs from escaping but eventually allowed the inspector to enter and assess the animals.

Berti, who had not received veterinary care during McLaren’s ownership, was left in appalling condition, weighing just under 9 kg and scoring a worrying one out of nine on the Body Condition Score scale. He was severely dehydrated and exhibited signs of skin inflammation. Maggie, too, showed signs of neglect, with her condition rated at two out of nine. She had painful, infected wounds on her legs and cried out in pain when examined by the vet.

The conditions in which these dogs existed were alarming. The property had only dry dog food that neither animal showed interest in consuming, and both were deprived of fresh water, a basic necessity for survival. Upon rescue, the dogs drank water so eagerly that it had to be temporarily withheld to avoid further distress.

After their rescue, Berti and Maggie found refuge at the SSPCA’s Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Glasgow, where they received much-needed treatment and care. Inspector Cannon noted the heartbreaking state of the dogs upon their arrival, expressing relief that they were saved before further suffering could occur.

Both dogs have now successfully found loving homes, marking a hopeful turnaround after their traumatic experience. The case serves as a stark reminder of the responsibility pet owners hold and the devastating consequences of neglect.

Animal welfare advocates continue to urge the public to report any signs of animal cruelty, emphasising that timely intervention can save lives.
