South Ayrshire pupils were bright sparks during Ayr Rotary Club’s tech challenge

**South Ayrshire Schools Shine Bright at Ayr Rotary Club’s Tech Challenge**

In an inspiring display of creativity and teamwork, secondary pupils from across South Ayrshire recently participated in the annual Ayr Rotary Technical Tournament held at Belmont Academy. This event, aimed at nurturing young talent in engineering and technology, brought together students from various schools to innovate and tackle real-world challenges.

The core of the competition involved the design, construction, and testing of a four-wheeled vehicle tasked with navigating a pipeline and performing debris clearance. Armed with an array of materials—including battery packs, cardboard, straws, and glue guns—students were set loose in the academy’s spacious assembly hall to put their engineering skills to the test.

Competitors were assessed by members of the Ayr Rotary Club based on several criteria, including the effectiveness of their design sketches, the rationale behind their final choices, team organisation, and challenges overcome throughout the process. The atmosphere in the hall alternated between intense focus and moments of light-hearted frustration, as teams grappled with unforeseen technical difficulties. As one Rotary spokesperson commented, “Discussions flourished, frustrations rose, and yet there were few tantrums—these were teams working hard under pressure.”

The highlight of the day was the final testing round when the creations were put through their paces against the pipeline challenge. Despite certain teams experiencing setbacks—earning subtle gasps from peers—others prevailed with remarkably innovative solutions.

Recognition at the event was well-deserved, with three standout teams crowned champions in their respective categories. Marr Sparks from Marr College triumphed in the Foundation category, Carrick 2 from Carrick Academy excelled in the Intermediary category, while Innovation Inc from Kyle Academy secured victory in the Advanced category. The top performers, Sophie Brown, Imagen Crossan, Celeb Henry, and Samuel Watson from Carrick Academy, were honoured with the prestigious trophy presented by Provost Iain Campbell.

In closing, the event was a resounding success, showcasing the potential of South Ayrshire’s youth and their ability to tackle technological challenges with creativity and collaboration. Congratulations to all participants for their outstanding efforts, and a heartfelt thank you to Provost Campbell and Scott Mulholland, Director of Education, for their support in presenting the awards. As young minds continue to innovate, the future of engineering and technology looks exceptionally bright in South Ayrshire.
