In an impressive display of culinary excellence, Buns & Crumbs, an artisan bakery situated on Beith Main Street in Ayrshire, has made its mark at the 2026 Scotland’s Best Croissant competition. The prestigious event, hosted by The Edinburgh Butter Company, saw Buns & Crumbs earn accolades in a newly established category designed to celebrate creative baking.

While the top honour of Scotland’s Best Croissant for 2026 was awarded to Edinburgh’s Patina, Buns & Crumbs achieved commendation for their innovative bake featuring ingredients derived from the pastry off-cuts of the lamination process. This unique approach not only demonstrates the bakery’s commitment to sustainability but also showcases their culinary creativity.

The competition, held at The Balmoral on Monday, October 26, featured a panel of skilled judges, including last year’s champion Cassie Bekas from Wheatberry Bakery, Darcie Maher of Lannan Bakery, and Zoe Ridgway, Head Pastry Chef at The Balmoral. Participants were encouraged to craft their dream croissant along with a second item, allowing for an outpouring of creativity without limitations on flavour or decoration.

Amongst the entries, Buns & Crumbs stood out with their exceptional pecan, date, and sea salt twist, which ultimately secured them first place in the category dedicated to off-cuts. Erika Sionis, the founder of Buns & Crumbs, expressed the bakery’s enthusiasm for participating in the competition, stating, “We were eager to enter the competition as a chance to meet more people. Today’s pastry was a pecan, date, and sea salt twist. We’re so glad to be here and to take home a prize; it’s been a great chance to network, too.”

Chloe Black, Director of The Edinburgh Butter Company, remarked on the competition’s growth, noting, “Every year this competition gets bigger and better, and the level of skill and passion from these bakers never ceases to amaze us.”

The recognition received by Buns & Crumbs not only highlights their dedication to their craft but also fosters a sense of pride within the Ayrshire community. As local establishments continue to innovate and inspire, events like this serve as a testament to Scotland’s thriving culinary scene.

In summary, Buns & Crumbs’ success at Scotland’s Best Croissant competition showcases their innovative spirit and mastery of baking. This accolade not only brings recognition to the bakery but also underscores the importance of creativity and sustainability in modern baking practices. Events such as these not only foster community engagement but also elevate the profile of local artisans within the competitive food landscape.
