Scots doc who told cops “I’m p*****” during drugs bender facing watchdog for working ‘under influence’

**Scots Doctor Faces Inquiry After Allegations of Working Under the Influence of Medication**

A Scottish psychiatrist, Dr Brendan Sweeney, is set to face a hearing by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) following serious allegations that he attended work while under the influence of prescribed medication. The investigation centres on claims that the 43-year-old, from Cambuslang near Glasgow, exhibited troubling behaviour, including stumbling and falling in front of patients on several occasions in November 2024.

Dr Sweeney’s past is marred by a notorious incident in October 2017, where he faced arrest after a drugs binge involving cocaine, ketamine, and alcohol. Witnesses reported him behaving aggressively in a Manchester bistro, indicating visible distress among patrons as law enforcement officers struggled to subdue him. At one point, as officers attempted to detain him, he was heard protesting, “I’m not drunk,” despite admitting under questioning that he was “p***ed.”

During this altercation, police discovered bags containing a mix of drugs in Dr Sweeney’s possession. He later faced legal repercussions for his actions, receiving a conditional discharge for drug possession and continued to work within the National Health Service (NHS), where he was described as an “asset”. After that incident, he avoided suspension and was placed under conditions for two years to ensure compliance with the standards of conduct expected from medical professionals.

The upcoming tribunal hearing, scheduled for 13 November, will examine not only the allegations regarding his conduct at work but also a separate conviction for careless driving related to a 2024 incident at Edinburgh Sheriff Court. Accusations stem from Dr Sweeney’s failure to drive responsibly, resulting in a fine and a two-year disqualification from holding a driving licence.

The MPTS has stated the tribunal will look deeply into how Dr Sweeney’s alleged actions might impact patient safety and his ability to practice medicine responsibly. Given the gravity of these allegations, the outcome of the tribunal could significantly affect his career within the NHS.

In summary, the case of Dr Sweeney underscores ongoing concerns regarding substance misuse among healthcare professionals, and the imperative for rigorous oversight within medical practice. As society increasingly demands accountability from those in positions of care, this case stands as a pivotal moment in reinforcing ethical standards in the medical community.
