Bonfire Night events in Glasgow and Edinburgh tonight as firework control zones in place

Glasgow and Edinburgh Gears Up for Bonfire Night Celebrations Amid Firework Control Zones

As Bonfire Night approaches, residents of Glasgow and Edinburgh prepare for a magical evening filled with captivating firework displays. Tonight, November 5, various organised events will take place throughout both cities, scheduled amidst strict firework control zones designed to enhance safety.

This year, there are 18 designated firework control zones that encompass both Glasgow and Edinburgh – with four zones in Glasgow and a significant 14 across Edinburgh. These zones impose restrictions on the use of fireworks, making it illegal to set off fireworks in public spaces or on private property, with the exception of Category 1 fireworks such as sparklers and party poppers. Nevertheless, the public is still invited to enjoy professionally organised firework displays, ensuring a festive environment free from hazards.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has emphasised the importance of attending organised events, highlighting that they are not only safer but also offer a more impressive spectacle. A spokesperson for the service remarked, “Our advice is always to attend an organised public firework display. It’s safer and better for the environment.”

For those planning to celebrate in Glasgow, the evening offers a selection of events featuring fireworks, food stalls, and family entertainment. Some notable displays include:

– **Levengrove Park, Dumbarton**: Commences at 6.30 pm, with fireworks scheduled for 7.30 pm.
– **McGavin Park, Kilwinning**: Food and funfair start at 4.30 pm, with a series of firework bursts throughout the evening.
– **GHA Rugby Club, Giffnock**: A ticketed event kicking off at 6 pm, followed by fireworks at 7.15 pm.

In Edinburgh, organisers have crafted an equally exciting array of firework displays. Key events are:

– **Sandys Community Centre**: The event starts at 6 pm, with fireworks at 7.30 pm.
– **Magdalene Community Centre**: A similar schedule with fireworks at 7.30 pm.
– **King George V Park, Currie**: Events initiate at 6 pm with fireworks lighting up the sky at 7.15 pm.
– **Calender Park, Falkirk**: The un-ticketed event runs from 6.30 pm to 8.15 pm, featuring live DJ entertainment before the fireworks.

Under the Firework and Pyrotechnic Articles (Scotland) Act 2022, local councils have the authority to impose these firework control zones to safeguard public safety. In Glasgow, these zones include areas in Govanhill, Pollockshields, Broomhouse, and Glasgow Harbour, effective from October 20 through November 9. Edinburgh’s restrictions apply to areas like Balerno, Calton Hill, Liberton, and Sighthill, running from October 30 to November 8.

In summary, while residents and visitors will enjoy the charm of Bonfire Night’s organised festivities, adherence to safety measures remains paramount. Individuals are encouraged to participate in public displays, making for a joyful and secure celebration while minimising the risks often associated with unsanctioned fireworks. Let the festivities illuminate the skies as communities gather to celebrate this cherished event together.
