Ex-Navy sailor who lost ability to walk hails Scots benefit for turning life around

### Ex-Royal Navy Sailor Credits Disability Benefit for Life Transformation After Accident

In a heartwarming account of resilience, Luke Pierce, a former Royal Navy sailor, has publicly praised Scotland’s Adult Disability Payment, which he credits for aiding his recovery after a life-altering accident in 2017. The 45-year-old veteran’s life took a dramatic turn when a freak occurrence during a football match left him with severe injuries, causing him to lose his ability to walk.

Pierce, who proudly served in the Navy for 13 years, aboard vessels such as HMS Ark Royal, HMS Defender, and HMS Prince of Wales, faced an unimaginable challenge when an over-inflated ball struck him on the head during a casual game at the HMS Nelson base in Portsmouth. Recalling the incident, he stated, “It came at me like a rocket. I knew something was wrong because I couldn’t hear properly. I had better odds of winning the lottery that day than experiencing an injury as severe as this.”

The impact of the ball resulted in a perforated eardrum, dislocation of an inner ear bone, and subsequently developed into a serious set of long-term health issues. These have included chronic dizziness, balance complications, and a diminished sense of taste following surgical intervention. Shortly before his medical discharge from the Navy in 2021, Pierce found himself unable to walk as doctors diagnosed him with functional neurological disorder (FND), a condition that disrupts the brain’s ability to communicate effectively with the body.

Now residing in Scotland following his posting to Rosyth in Fife, Pierce supports himself with the assistance of crutches due to his fluctuating symptoms, which can include numbness, fatigue, and other mobility challenges. He articulated his mixed situation, saying, “The top half of me is absolutely fine. My mind works perfectly well. But my lower body doesn’t always want to cooperate.”

Since leaving the Navy and embarking on a new life alongside his wife, Niki, Pierce has found purpose as a civil servant. Highlighting the support from the Adult Disability Payment, he mentioned, “People don’t always see the extra costs that come with a disability. Things like mobility equipment, travel, car adaptations, and heating all add up.”

The Adult Disability Payment, introduced by the Scottish Government in 2022, aims to provide a more compassionate and accessible support system than the previous mechanism, the Personal Independence Payment (PIP). Pierce’s experience underscores the importance of such support systems, aspiring to raise awareness about the unpredictability of life and the sudden changes that can occur. In his own words, “Disability can happen to anyone. Support helps us live our lives as independently as possible.”

### Summary
Luke Pierce’s inspiring story serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictable nature of life and the vital role that disability benefits play in aiding individuals through challenging transitions. His gratitude for Scotland’s Adult Disability Payment illustrates not just the programme’s significance but also the broader need for compassionate support systems that empower individuals to lead fulfilling lives despite adversities. As Pierce has demonstrated, resilience coupled with adequate support can lead to meaningful recovery and independence.
