Suspected Marburg virus cases in Hamburg test negative amid fears of outbreak

Suspected cases of the Marburg virus in Hamburg, Germany have recently tested negative for the highly contagious disease, alleviating fears of a potential outbreak. The two travellers, who had returned from Rwanda to Hamburg via Frankfurt, underwent examinations at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) on Wednesday.

Concerns were raised when one of the passengers contacted doctors while on the train to Hamburg, prompting the closure of platforms at Hamburg Central Station. The individuals were isolated at the station and then moved to a specialized area at UKE for further assessment. Both passengers had worked in a hospital in Rwanda as part of their medical studies.

Rwanda is currently facing an outbreak of the Marburg virus, with 36 confirmed cases, 25 people in isolation, and 11 reported deaths as of Wednesday. Despite one of the medical students having minimal contact with an infected patient in Rwanda, both passengers tested negative for the Marburg virus in a PCR test. Authorities stated that neither passenger exhibited symptoms corresponding to the disease during the journey.

Symptoms of the Marburg virus include fever, muscle pains, diarrhoea, vomiting, and potentially death through severe blood loss. The virus is believed to originate in fruit bats and spreads among humans through close contact with bodily fluids or contaminated surfaces. The Hamburg health authority confirmed that there was no risk of infection for other passengers as the tested individuals did not have the virus.

The student who had contact with an infected person will be monitored for up to 21 days, the incubation period for the virus. The UK Foreign Office updated its travel advice for Rwanda following the outbreak, with investigations ongoing to determine the source of infection within the country.

Hamburg officials reassured the public that the city is well-prepared for potential epidemics, with expert teams in place to handle such situations. The incident highlights the importance of vigilance and swift response in the face of contagious diseases, ensuring public health and safety remains a top priority.
