Alec Baldwin’s film “Rust” is set to make its world premiere three years after the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The premiere will take place at the 2024 EnergaCamerimage International Film Festival in Poland from November 16 to November 23.
The screening will be accompanied by a special panel discussion featuring director Joel Souza, who was also injured during the incident that took Hutchins’ life. Cinematographer Bianca Cline, who completed the project after the tragedy, and Hutchins’ mentor Stephen Lighthill will also be part of the discussion. They aim to shed light on the challenges faced by the crew in continuing production after the loss of Hutchins and how they strived to honour her artistic vision.
Baldwin, the film’s lead actor and co-producer, will not be present at the premiere, as confirmed by an external source. It is unclear whether other key cast members such as Travis Fimmel, Frances Fisher, Josh Hopkins, and Patrick Scott McDermott will attend.
“Rust” follows the story of a 13-year-old boy navigating life in 1880s Wyoming after a tragic event leads him to flee with his estranged grandfather. The film encountered a fatal accident during its production in October 2021 when a prop gun held by Baldwin discharged a live bullet, resulting in the death of Hutchins.
Baldwin faced charges of involuntary manslaughter, but the case was dismissed in July after it was revealed that crucial evidence had been withheld. The film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison. Her recent appeal for a new trial was rejected, upholding her conviction and denying her release from custody.
