Augusta National has provided an update on the status of the 2025 Masters tournament following the damage caused by Hurricane Helene to the iconic golf course. The hurricane wreaked havoc as it made its way through Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, hitting Augusta National particularly hard.
Chairman Fred Ridley affirmed that despite the significant damage caused by the hurricane, the Masters would proceed as scheduled. Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia described the storm as sparing no one, with many in the Augusta area left without power in its aftermath.
Speaking at a press conference in Japan ahead of the Asia Pacific Amateur Championship, Ridley reassured golf fans that the Masters would go ahead as planned from April 10-13, with defending champion Scottie Scheffler ready to take on the challenge once again.
Augusta National had closed in May for its annual summer break and was set to reopen in mid-October. Ridley acknowledged the impact of the storm on the golf course and the surrounding community, stating that efforts were underway to restore the course and support recovery efforts in the area.
In a commendable move, Augusta National, in collaboration with the Community Foundation for the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA), announced a donation of $5 million (£3.8 million) towards the Hurricane Helene Community Crisis Fund. Ridley emphasised the importance of providing immediate assistance to those affected by the storm, highlighting the club’s commitment to aiding the local community in its time of need.
