A tragic incident occurred on the B851 near Inverness where a driver lost their life after their car left the road and caught fire. The dreadful crash took place shortly after 11.20am on Wednesday, October 2. Police Scotland responded to reports of a vehicle on fire, with the car having veered off the road and fallen into a nearby ditch. Scottish Fire and Rescue dispatched three appliances to the scene as smoke was seen billowing from the roadside.
The driver was confirmed dead after the car “left the carriageway” near Daviot village south of Inverness. The road had to be closed for approximately 30 hours following the tragic incident. Forensic officers in protective gear were seen examining the scene, with the burnt-out car lying in an embankment. Police Scotland has taken the step of referring the case to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner, which conducts independent investigations into incidents involving the police.
Authorities have clarified that officers were not pursuing the vehicle before the crash occurred. A spokesperson for Police Scotland stated, “We are investigating the death of the driver of a vehicle which left the carriageway of the B851 near Inverness shortly after 11.20 am on Wednesday, 2 October 2024. Enquiries remain ongoing. The circumstances have been referred to The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner.”
