Coatbridge’s MP, Frank McNally, has called for increased investment in the Scottish Ambulance Service following his recent visit to the town’s ambulance station. During his visit, Mr. McNally met with local ambulance crews and union representatives to gain firsthand insight into the challenges faced by frontline workers in delivering lifesaving care under significant pressure.
Mr. McNally commended the dedication and resilience of ambulance staff, emphasising their crucial role in ensuring patient safety and public confidence in health services. He highlighted the need for resources and support to match the growing pressures on the system in order to continue providing this vital service.
After the visit, the MP expressed his admiration for the heroic work of ambulance crews, noting their efforts in saving lives daily amidst increasing demands and challenging circumstances. Stressing the importance of adequate resources and support, Mr. McNally called for the Scottish Ambulance Service to be fully equipped and funded to maintain patient safety as a top priority.
Acknowledging the unprecedented levels of pressure faced by ambulance crews, Mr. McNally pledged to collaborate with unions to urge the Scottish Government for necessary investment and reforms to improve working conditions within the service. He underscored the significance of providing the right equipment, training, and staffing levels to enable swift and effective responses to emergencies.
Furthermore, the visit underscored the importance of enhancing working conditions to retain and support the ambulance workforce. Union representatives highlighted the physical and emotional toll of the job on crews, advocating for increased support in terms of funding and resources to enhance response times, reduce hospital handover times, and ensure staff well-being.
Andy Irving from the GMB union emphasised the dedication of ambulance crews to serving the community and called for investment to enhance service quality, cut costs, provide training, and prioritize safety for both patients and staff. Mr. McNally reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating with unions to advocate for the required investment and reforms from the Scottish Government.
In response, a Scottish Government spokesperson acknowledged the challenging circumstances faced by the Ambulance Service and highlighted over £2.5 million invested to support the mental well-being of health and social care staff, providing access to various well-being resources to aid frontline workers.
