Hurricane Milton is predicted to hit Florida’s Gulf coast as a Category 3 hurricane on Wednesday, bringing destructive winds, life-threatening storm surges, and flash floods to areas already impacted by Hurricane Helene. The National Hurricane Center reported that Milton quickly escalated from a tropical storm to a Category 1 hurricane on Sunday, with sustained winds reaching 90mph.
This impending hurricane follows closely on the heels of Hurricane Helene which struck Florida’s Big Bend region less than two weeks ago, claiming over 220 lives and causing extensive damage. As of Monday morning, Milton is moving northwest through the southern Gulf of Mexico towards the west coast of the Florida Peninsula, with projections indicating a potential landfall in the heavily populated Tampa Bay area before progressing towards Orlando.
Forecasts suggest that up to 15 inches of rainfall could deluge parts of Florida’s peninsula and the Florida Keys by Wednesday evening, with heavy rains expected to trigger significant flash floods. A storm surge watch has been issued for much of Florida’s west coast, with peak surges estimated to reach up to 12 feet in Tampa Bay and the Anclote River.
Authorities are urging residents to prepare for what may be the most extensive evacuation since 2017’s Hurricane Irma. Mandatory evacuations are probable for over half a million individuals in low-lying areas, with officials emphasizing the necessity of heeding evacuation orders to safeguard lives.
President Joe Biden has been briefed on the situation and the administration is mobilizing resources in anticipation of the storm. Governor Ron DeSantis disclosed that 4,000 National Guard members have been dispatched to aid in debris clearance from Helene to mitigate potential impact from Milton. The governor stressed the urgency of finalizing hurricane preparedness plans.
Experts have warned that debris from Helene could pose additional hazards during Milton’s onslaught, emphasizing the importance of strict adherence to evacuation directives. Floridians are advised to be vigilant and take necessary precautions ahead of Hurricane Milton’s expected arrival.
