Sinfield, aged 44, joined the England set-up as a defence coach in 2023, following Borthwick from Leicester. He transitioned to a role focusing on skills and mentoring players under Felix Jones’ arrival, which he will now continue in a reduced capacity outside of Test windows and during match weeks. His decision to stay is seen as a positive development for Borthwick, especially after recent departures from his coaching staff.
Expressing his excitement about continuing to work with the team, Sinfield stated, “This new arrangement allows me to keep doing the thing that I’m passionate about, coaching and mentoring players, while also balancing other commitments which are important to me.” Aside from his coaching duties, Sinfield has also been actively involved in raising funds for motor neurone disease (MND) charities and research, inspired by his close friend Rob Burrow’s diagnosis.
As Sinfield continues his charitable work, Joe El-Abd has been appointed as the new defence coach for England, ahead of the upcoming autumn fixtures. Meanwhile, Felix Jones will provide analysis support remotely from Dublin as he serves a 12-month notice period after resigning in August. England’s attempt to bring in Phil Morrow from Saracens as a replacement for Aled Walters faced opposition from Premiership clubs, highlighting concerns about potential conflicts of interest.
