Edinburgh City Council is taking steps to charge Oasis for all costs related to the band’s upcoming concert in the city next year. This decision comes after the council spent almost £40,000 supporting Taylor Swift’s concerts this summer and did not receive reimbursement from the organizers. Council leader Cammy Day emphasised that taxpayers should not bear the expenses of hosting such large-scale events, even though they bring economic benefits to the city. A new policy enforcing 100% cost recovery for commercial events came into effect on October 1. This policy allows the council to recover expenses incurred for services like security, lighting, cleaning, and more that are necessary for concerts and sports events.
During Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concerts at Murrayfield in June, the council spent significant amounts on various services, including security measures, lighting, temporary toilets, and staff overtime. While some costs were covered by the organizers and Scottish Rugby, the council still faced a substantial financial gap. Greens city councillor Dan Heap supported the move towards full cost recovery, highlighting the need for event organizers to cover their own expenses rather than relying on public funds. Despite the costs incurred by the council, some argue that the economic boost brought by such events justifies the additional expenditures on services.
