Self-proclaimed billionaire Donald Trump has taken a philanthropic step by launching a GoFundMe page aimed at aiding the victims of Hurricane Helene. Despite his estimated net worth of $4 billion, the former president called upon others to contribute towards the relief efforts for those affected by the deadly storm that wreaked havoc in the southeastern United States last week.
Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida before causing widespread destruction across neighbouring states, resulting in power outages, fallen trees, and severe flooding. The calamity has claimed the lives of at least 137 individuals as of Tuesday morning. Trump’s fundraiser, labelled as “Trump authorized,” has managed to raise $1.7 million from over 9,500 donations within a day of its launch.
The initiative, which is in partnership with the Christian humanitarian aid organisation Samaritan’s Purse, aims to provide essential supplies like fuel, food, water, and other resources to assist the affected regions, particularly Georgia. While notable donors include former Georgia Senator Kelly Loeffler, hedge fund CEO Bill Ackman, Ultimate Fighting Championship CEO Dana White, musician Kid Rock, and outdoors store Bass Pro Shops, there is no confirmation if Trump himself has made a contribution.
The GoFundMe page serves as an opportunity for supporters of the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement to extend financial aid to their fellow Americans impacted by Hurricane Helene. Trump’s description on the page emphasises his personal involvement in assessing the aftermath on the ground and highlights the significance of every donation in aiding those in distress.
Trump’s visit to Valdosta, Georgia, one of the worst-hit areas, saw him criticise the state’s Governor Brian Kemp for purportedly failing to establish communication with President Joe Biden. However, Kemp had already clarified the communication with Biden, who refuted Trump’s claims of inaction. The former president also alleged on social media platform Truth Social that Biden and North Carolina’s Governor Roy Cooper were neglecting relief efforts in Republican areas, an accusation lacking substantiation.
As the fundraiser continues to garner support and donations, Trump’s endeavour to rally assistance for Hurricane Helene’s victims reflects a unified effort to alleviate the widespread devastation caused by the natural disaster.
