Roadworks on the M74 in South Lanarkshire have begun, with a duration of seven months planned for major bridge refurbishment at the Nethan Viaduct. The project includes various works such as waterproofing, concrete repairs, resurfacing, strengthening, and barrier upgrades. To ensure safety during the construction, a 30mph speed limit is enforced with the help of average speed cameras along the affected stretch of the motorway.
Two-lane contraflows in each direction will be in place until the end of April, causing traffic speeds to be reduced by half. The speed cameras are located between junctions 9 and 11. The project, undertaken by Amey on behalf of Transport Scotland, will progress through five phases from October 1 until April 30, 2025.
The initial phases involve closure of the hard shoulder and lane one on the northbound carriageway until December 7, followed by further lane closures until January 7. Phases three and four will then shift to the southbound side, happening between January 8 to March 14 and March 14 to 28, respectively. Despite these closures, two lanes will remain open for traffic in each direction throughout the works.
Motorists are advised that abnormal loads will be restricted through the affected areas, and occasional overnight total closures will be required at the beginning and end of each phase. Preparations have been ongoing, with the installation of average speed cameras. The final phase in April 2025 will involve work on the central reservation, with lane two closures on both carriageways.
Transport officials emphasise that these efforts aim to enhance safety and improve the road conditions for daily commuters. The roadworks aim to benefit the thousands of vehicles using this route each day, ultimately enhancing the overall experience for road users.
