President Joe Biden has made it clear that he does not support any strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities by Israel, amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East. The announcement came as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to retaliate against Tehran for ballistic missile attacks that were recently thwarted.
Biden’s statement rejecting Israeli strikes on Iran was made as he boarded Air Force One, with the President stating, “The answer is no,” when questioned by reporters. He emphasised the United States’ unwavering solidarity and support for Israel and its people.
Following a phone call with other Group of Seven leaders, discussions were held regarding the coordination of new sanctions against Iran in response to the failed ballistic missile attacks. Nearly 200 warheads were intercepted by US and Israeli forces during the attempted attack.
During a briefing on hurricane relief efforts, Biden praised the successful interception of the Iranian attack as a demonstration of the Israeli military’s capability and the close cooperation between the US and Israel in defence planning. The President highlighted the extensive coordination between the two countries in anticipation of and defence against expected attacks.
In terms of Israel’s potential response to the thwarted Iranian attack, Biden mentioned that ongoing discussions were taking place between US and Israeli officials. He noted that the consequences for Tehran were yet to be determined and stated plans to engage in further conversations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The message to be conveyed to Netanyahu will be based on the conclusions drawn from these discussions and assessments of the situation.
The situation in the Middle East remains tense as discussions and diplomatic efforts continue to unfold between the involved parties. Biden’s clear stance on not supporting strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities reflects the US’s commitment to peace and stability in the region.
