Here’s how to celebrate World Mental Health Day 2024

World Mental Health Day 2024 is set to be a day of reflection and action, urging individuals to prioritise mental wellbeing, especially in the workplace. The official theme for this year, “It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace,” underscores the significance of creating supportive work environments where mental health is a focal point. In the past, mental health and work were seen as separate entities, but with increasing levels of burnout, anxiety, and job-related stress, the need to address mental health in the workplace is more apparent than ever.

The theme for World Mental Health Day 2024 serves as a call to action to integrate mental health into the core of workplace culture, rather than treating it as an afterthought. The global pandemic has exacerbated workplace stress, with employees facing challenges such as post-pandemic adjustments, economic pressures, and the fast-paced nature of modern work. Mental health is no longer confined to personal lives; it directly impacts job performance, creativity, engagement, and overall life satisfaction.

According to Tsuyoshi Akiyama, president of the World Federation for Mental Health, the Covid-19 pandemic has brought to light the urgent need to address mental health issues in the workplace on a global scale. Burnout, anxiety, and depression have become prevalent in workplaces, with statistics showing that a significant percentage of employees experience burnout, emotional drain, and feeling “used up” at the end of the workday.

Untreated mental health issues not only affect individuals but also have a substantial economic cost. The World Health Organization estimates that depression and anxiety lead to the loss of 12 billion working days worldwide annually, costing the global economy $1 trillion each year. In the US alone, productivity losses due to mental health issues continue to rise. Addressing workplace mental health is not only essential for individual well-being but also as an investment in a healthier, more productive workforce that can drive economic and cultural transformation.

As World Mental Health Day 2024 approaches, there are numerous ways for individuals, whether employees or employers, to raise awareness and take action. Hosting mental health workshops, facilitating open dialogues, promoting mindfulness breaks, advocating for flexible work hours, organising wellness days, and participating in global events are all impactful ways to foster a supportive and mentally healthy work environment.

By actively engaging in activities that promote mental health awareness and support, individuals can contribute to a positive shift in workplace culture and help create environments where mental well-being is prioritised and celebrated.
