Jonathan Majors’ movie, “Magazine Dreams,” has finally secured a release date in 2025, two years after being dropped by its original distributor, Searchlight Pictures. The film, directed by Elijah Bynum, will now be distributed by Briarcliff Entertainment and is scheduled to hit theatres in the first quarter of 2025.
Initially intended for a December 2023 release, “Magazine Dreams” was removed from Searchlight’s release schedule following Majors’ conviction for harassing and assaulting his ex-girlfriend. This incident also led to Majors losing his role as Kang the Conquerer in the upcoming Avengers film. The movie, which was originally titled “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” has since been renamed “Avengers: Doomsday,” with Robert Downey Jr. taking on a different antagonist role.
Majors, expressing his dismay over the decision, plays the character Killian Maddox, an aspiring bodybuilder who turns to steroids in his pursuit of fame in “Magazine Dreams.” The film delves into themes of celebrity and violence, garnering attention after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2023.
To embody the character of Maddox, Majors went through an intense physical transformation, consuming 6,100 calories daily for four months and engaging in six hours of training each day to attain the required muscular physique. Briarcliff Entertainment, the new distributors of the film, are also behind the release of the controversial Donald Trump biopic, “The Apprentice.”
Despite avoiding jail time, Majors was sentenced to a one-year batterer intervention program in Los Angeles and required to continue therapy, in addition to paying a fine. A protective order was issued for his ex-girlfriend during the sentencing. Details emerged during the trial of how Majors had physically assaulted his ex-girlfriend, leading to his arrest by the Manhattan Criminal Court.
The actor’s career suffered further blows as he was dropped from several other projects post-conviction. These included a brand partnership with Valentino, endorsements for the Texas Rangers baseball team and the US Army, as well as the lead role in the film adaptation of Walter Mosley’s novel, “The Man in My Basement.”
Jonathan Majors, who was once on a promising career trajectory, faced setbacks following the legal proceedings. Despite the challenges, “Magazine Dreams” marks his return to the big screen under a new distributor, poised for a 2025 release date.
