A planning application has been submitted for a new wind farm along the M74 in South Lanarkshire, with the proposal aiming to power over 170,000 homes. The proposed wind farm by M74 West Ltd would consist of 22 turbines spanning both sides of the motorway near Abington services. The project also includes plans for solar panels and a battery energy storage system. Community feedback from public exhibitions in nearby villages has been taken into account in the final application submitted to the Scottish Government. The renewable energy developer, Renewco Power, has also submitted their application to the government’s energy consents unit. South Lanarkshire Council will be contacted as a consultee in the planning process.
Richard Koiak, the Head of development, expressed gratitude to those who participated in the consultation events and provided valuable feedback. The project aims to align with Scotland’s climate and energy goals, targeting 20GW of onshore wind by 2030 and achieving net zero emissions by 2045. The wind farm is expected to have a 40-year lifespan and will feature turbines of up to 200 metres in height, along with solar panels and a battery energy storage system. The project’s output will connect to the national grid at Redshaw.
The site at Abington was chosen due to existing similar developments, high wind speeds, accessible traffic routes, proximity to the electricity network, and to minimize impact on conservation areas. The project timeline suggests that construction could commence in the first half of 2027 if planning permission is granted by the end of the following year. The project is seen as a significant investment in South Lanarkshire that will support emissions reduction and net zero commitments by the Scottish and UK governments.
Renewco highlighted that the wind farm project would also benefit the local community through a projects fund valued at around £825,000 per year. A pilot project for community grants has already generated interest but has been paused during the application process. The company is enthusiastic about supporting various community initiatives and appreciates the applications received so far. The M74 West wind farm project represents a step towards Scotland’s renewable energy goals and demonstrates a commitment to sustainable energy development in the region.
