F1’s ‘Rookie Race’ Delayed in Abu Dhabi
Formula 1 has decided to postpone its unique ‘rookie race’ until at least 2025 following discussions at the F1 Commission meeting. The initial plan was to hold a sprint race during the post-season test at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, providing aspiring F1 drivers with an opportunity to demonstrate their skills.
Despite receiving significant support for the idea, the FIA, F1’s governing body, cited “timing and organisational constraints” as reasons for the event’s postponement this year. Concerns were raised about the strain it would place on team members after a demanding 24-race season, as well as logistical challenges related to freight and broadcasting arrangements.
The proposal will be revisited for 2025, with most teams expressing their backing for the concept as a valuable way to evaluate their young drivers beyond junior series competitions.
In a statement, the FIA explained, “The concept of a ‘rookie race’ to be added to the 2024 post-season test schedule at Abu Dhabi was discussed. While the concept received widespread support, it was determined that due to timing and organisational constraints, the event would not take place in 2024, and discussions will continue to formulate a potential concept and plan for 2025.”
Additionally, during the commission meeting, there were discussions about revising the new 2026 engine and chassis regulations to enhance the expected aerodynamic performance of the cars. Teams expressed concerns that the upcoming generation of cars might be too slow, prompting adjustments to the designs.
Following a three-week hiatus, Formula 1 will resume with the United States Grand Prix in Austin on October 20.
