A tragic incident unfolded in Florida, where a 14-year-old girl from Ukraine stands accused of beating her 79-year-old grandmother to death. The teenager, identified as Sofia Koval, recently moved to the United States and is now facing adult charges of manslaughter.
Authorities revealed that the charges against the teen were brought four months after the fatal incident occurred, with deputies responding to a distressing scene on May 23. The grandmother, Yevheniia Koval, was found unresponsive at her condo in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida, with evidence suggesting that a belt and a walker were used in the attack.
Reports indicate that the elderly victim sustained head trauma, extensive bruising, and internal bleeding, as confirmed by an autopsy. Shocking cell phone footage obtained by WPLG captures the police presence outside the condominium where the tragic event took place.
During investigations, Sofia Koval’s father mentioned his daughter had been exhibiting behavioural problems, possibly linked to her experiences in war-torn Ukraine and separation from her mother. On the night of the incident, the father had taken away his daughter’s phone as a form of discipline, leaving her alone with her grandmother.
Upon his return home later that night, he found the grandmother non-responsive. Questioned by her father, Sofia claimed that her grandmother had scratched her, prompting her to defend herself by striking her multiple times with a belt. The teen later expressed remorse for her actions but also mentioned how she believed her grandmother was already dying and claimed to have assisted her in passing away.
The gravity of the situation led to Sofia Koval being placed in protective custody at Broward County Jail following her court appearance. While facing a potential maximum penalty of up to 15 years in prison, her age may also sway the outcome towards juvenile sanctions within the justice system.
