Visitors to the Queen’s View & The Whangie Car Park will now have to pay for parking as the landowner – The Auchineden Estate – aims to address issues related to fly tipping. The introduction of charges at this popular Scots beauty spot, located on the A809 between Carbeth and Croftamie in west Stirlingshire, comes in response to persistent problems with fly tipping. The parking costs range from £2 for an hour to £7 for 12 hours, with signage notifying drivers of the new fees.
The decision to implement parking charges was made by Complete Parking Services (CPSUK) Ltd, following a request from The Auchineden Estate in April to introduce paid parking and an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system. CPS stated that the revenue generated from parking fees will be reinvested into maintaining the car park and improving trails, as well as addressing the ongoing fly tipping issues which have posed a significant challenge for the site owners.
Pictures of burnt-out cars at the location were shared, highlighting the extent of the problem. A CPS spokesperson highlighted the importance of using the revenue to maintain the car park, enhance trails, and combat fly tipping. The ANPR system acts as a deterrent to fly tippers by logging all vehicles entering the car park. Those who do not comply with the car park’s terms and conditions may receive a £100 parking charge notice.
The signage at the location specifies that payment must be made online, with full and accurate vehicle details required. Notably, blue badge holders are not exempt from the parking charges. While the agreement is governed by English and Welsh law, according to Citizens Advice Scotland, motorists entering private car parks enter into a contract with the landowner, and enforcement actions can be taken for violations.
Drivers faced with a parking charge notice can opt to pay, take no action, or challenge the ticket. Private parking fines are not criminal matters, with operators potentially offering discounts for early payment. Non-payment could result in continued requests for payment or legal action. The introduction of parking fees aims to tackle fly tipping and maintain the beauty of the landscape for future visitors to enjoy.
