Pro Football Focus has revolutionised how fans engage with the NFL by offering grades and advanced statistics to assess each player’s performance on a play-by-play basis. This ranges from star quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes to lesser-known guards and linebackers. Instead of waiting until the next day, PFF now provides in-game grades with a slight delay, allowing fans to use it alongside television broadcasts for a more comprehensive understanding of game dynamics.
The new in-game grading feature will debut during Thursday night’s clash between Tampa Bay and Atlanta. Khaled Elsayed, PFF’s vice president of data, expressed excitement about this development, highlighting how it enhances the viewing experience as grades evolve in real-time during matches. Since its inception in 2007, PFF has garnered a substantial following, with all 32 NFL teams and over 200 college teams subscribing to its service for player evaluation.
While the live grading poses challenges as it relies on televised footage rather than the all-22 film, which captures all players on every play, PFF has deployed a dedicated team of analysts to ensure accuracy. Each game involves around 30 analysts, collectively investing about 90 hours per match to collect data on player performance. Despite the meticulous final grading process post-game, test runs have shown a commendable 93% accuracy rate with live grading.
Elsayed emphasised that the live grades provide insights into players’ performances in real-time, offering fans a more immersive experience of the game. The accuracy may vary by position, with coverage by defensive backs and intricate aspects like run blocking requiring deeper analysis for precise grading. Fans can access the live grades with a 15 to 30-minute delay, available for around 90 minutes after a game before being locked until the final grading is completed the next day.
PFF’s in-game grading feature marks a significant step towards enhancing fan engagement and understanding of player performances, promising a dynamic and interactive viewing experience for NFL enthusiasts.
