Shawn Mendes hints at love triangle drama in series of tweets
Shawn Mendes has made subtle references to the ongoing rumours of a love triangle involving Sabrina Carpenter and Camila Cabello. The 26-year-old “Lost in Japan” singer took to X (formerly Twitter) to address questions from fans about his relationship status with pop star Cabello. Despite their second breakup in June 2023, Mendes confirmed that they still hold a special bond during an appearance on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast.
In response to fans’ inquiries about his romantic life, Mendes engaged with followers on X, asserting his commitment to Cabello. Speculation about a love triangle intensified when Carpenter, Cabello, and Mendes were all present at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards in a recent event.
Carpenter, who released her album “Short nā Sweet” last August, was linked to Mendes in 2023 after his initial split from Cabello. Tracks on the album such as “Taste,” “Sharpest Tool,” and “Coincidence” stirred further speculation about their relationship. Despite the ongoing gossip, Mendes used social media to convey his support for Cabello, emphasising the importance of honesty and real connections with his fans.
In a bid to dispel the swirling rumours, Mendes expressed his frustration at the continued speculations and how they have affected him. While acknowledging the potential consequences of his statements, he reiterated his desire for genuine interactions with his audience. Mendes and Cabello’s public relationship began in 2019 but came to an end in November 2021. Amidst dating rumours with Carpenter in early 2023, Mendes clarified on a TV show that they were not together.
Although photographs of Mendes and Cabello kissing at Coachella in April 2023 reignited talks of a reconciliation, they parted ways for good just two months later. The singer’s recent online comments underscore his attempt to address the persistent gossip and maintain transparency with his supporters.
