Widow’s Generous Donation to Scottish Students in Will Fulfil Husband’s Wish
A widow has fulfilled her late husband’s wishes by generously donating millions of pounds to support Scottish students. Ruth Smith, who passed away in 2022, bequeathed £3.3 million to the University of Aberdeen as a tribute to her husband Bernard. The donation was made in accordance with Bernard’s desire for his estate to contribute to the advancement of medical research. Bernard, an alumnus of the University who graduated from the medical school in 1940, had a longstanding connection with the institution.
Before Bernard’s passing in 1985, the couple had agreed to leave a substantial legacy gift to the University upon Ruth’s death. Throughout her lifetime, Ruth showed her support for the University by making various donations between 1987 and 1990, specifically aimed at funding neurological research. She continued her financial contributions after the establishment of The University of Aberdeen Development Trust USA, now known as the University of Aberdeen Foundation, in 1994. Ruth ultimately honoured Bernard’s final wishes through the significant donation in her will.
Describing the funds as “transformational,” the University highlighted that the donation would help enhance its world-class expertise in neuroscience and medical imaging. The aim is to elevate research in neuroscience and improve teaching practices for future generations. Clare Livingston, Interim Director of Advancement and Campaign Director at the University, expressed gratitude towards the Smith family and the University of Aberdeen Foundation in the US for their support in managing this remarkable gift.
Professor David Blackbourn, Head of the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition, emphasised that the Smiths’ legacy would enable the University to expand its capabilities in neuroscience and medical imaging. This expansion would facilitate advancements in research related to conditions such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Motor Neuron Disease, with the goal of mitigating their impact on individuals and society in the future.
University Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor George Boyne, commended the Smiths’ commitment and described their transformative donation as inspiring. The University acknowledged the vital role played by its alumni and supporters in ensuring its ongoing success. The generous gift from the Smiths highlights their enduring relationship with the University and their dedication to advancing medical research, leaving a lasting impact on generations to come.
