A spacecraft has embarked on a mission to investigate an asteroid that was previously targeted by NASA in a test to safeguard the Earth. The European Space Agency’s Hera spacecraft was launched by SpaceX from Cape Canaveral on a two-year journey to explore the small, harmless asteroid that was hit by NASA’s Dart spacecraft two years ago. This mission serves as a preparatory step for a potential scenario where a dangerous space rock could pose a threat to our planet.
The impact caused by NASA’s Dart spacecraft in 2022 altered the orbit of the asteroid named Dimorphos, demonstrating the possibility of diverting a threatening asteroid with advance planning. Scientists are keen to study the aftermath of the collision to assess Dart’s effectiveness and determine any adjustments needed for future planetary defense strategies. University of Maryland astronomer Derek Richardson highlighted the importance of gathering detailed information from this mission for potential future deflection efforts.
Hera, equipped with a dozen scientific instruments, is scheduled to reach Dimorphos by the end of 2026 after swinging past Mars for a gravity boost. The spacecraft will closely examine the mass, shape, and composition of the asteroid to enhance our understanding of its characteristics. Furthermore, two Cubesats will be deployed from Hera to gather additional data, with one utilizing radar to explore beneath the asteroid’s surface. The aim is to confirm the relationship between Dimorphos and its larger companion Didymos.
While Dimorphos and Didymos do not pose any threat to Earth, their study is crucial for developing strategies to deal with potentially hazardous near-Earth objects.
