Six Cornell University international students, specially selected for a summer program, are facing a lawsuit claiming they caused $200,000 worth of damage during an eight-day stay at an Airbnb property. Eliza VanCort, a motivational speaker and author, has taken both Cornell University and Airbnb to court over what she describes as the “bizarre” defilement of her home in Ithaca, New York.
The lawsuit filed in New York State Supreme Court alleges that the exchange students caused extensive destruction to VanCort’s personal property, including woodwork, walls, stairs, countertops, and cabinetry throughout her home. VanCort shared photos and videos showing significant damage to the craftsman-style house, estimated to be worth $700,000, with wooden flooring, moulding, and trim visibly harmed.
In the footage, VanCort highlighted various instances of damage, such as antique French doors stripped of varnish, a piano with a damaged surface, and a kitchen counter missing grout between tiles. Additionally, she pointed out intentional damage to an antique rug, paint patches scratched off surfaces, and other signs of deliberate destruction.
VanCort expressed distress over the destruction of a cherished cast-iron pan, passed down through generations and believed to have survived the Holocaust. Despite having resources to address the situation, VanCort felt compelled to speak out about the incident, emphasising her commitment to helping others.
Cornell University declined to comment on the matter, while Airbnb chose not to provide a statement due to ongoing legal proceedings. VanCort’s ordeal began in summer 2023 when she agreed to host six exchange students recommended by Cornell. Despite assurances of the students’ integrity and supervision, the damage caused during their stay totalled over $180,000, with additional losses from missed rental opportunities.
The emotional toll on VanCort has been significant, as she navigates efforts to seek reimbursement and resolution from Cornell and Airbnb. Despite her disappointment with the situation’s handling, she remains hopeful for a fair resolution as the case progresses.
VanCort is seeking a total of $540,000 in damages, aiming to hold both Cornell and Airbnb accountable for the negligence and breach of contract she claims to have experienced. The lawsuit underscores the challenges faced by hosts in shared accommodation arrangements, highlighting the importance of trust and accountability in such interactions.
