Youngsters at Dalbeattie Primary recently celebrated Fairtrade Fortnight and the 30th anniversary of the Fairtrade Foundation. The school’s eco committee took the lead by creating Fairtrade chocolate and Malteser crispies using ingredients generously donated by local stores such as Dalbeattie Co-op, Castle Douglas Spar, Tesco, and Dalbeattie Spar. To support the cause, pupils contributed donations to raise funds for the Fairtrade Foundation.
In addition to the tasty treats, the students engaged in a variety of educational activities to learn more about Fairtrade. They participated in a Fairtrade quiz that featured products available in nearby shops, enhancing their knowledge and understanding of the Fairtrade concept. The school expressed gratitude to Dalbeattie Co-op, Castle Douglas Spar, Tesco, Dalbeattie Spar, and Dalbeattie Londis for their support in facilitating these activities.
The children who participated in the quiz made £1 donations and completed forms for a prize draw. Several lucky winners were selected during an assembly, with special recognition given to those who compiled comprehensive lists of additional Fairtrade items beyond the quiz selection. All participants received treat-sized bags of Maltesers as a token of appreciation for their efforts in the quiz.
Through these initiatives, Dalbeattie Primary managed to raise nearly £100 for the Fairtrade Foundation. Such activities also contribute towards the school retaining its Fairachiever School Status, which requires reapplication every two years to showcase ongoing commitment to Fairtrade principles.
The engagement of Dalbeattie Primary pupils in Fairtrade Fortnight highlights the school’s dedication to promoting ethical trading practices and sustainability among the younger generation. By actively involving students in hands-on activities and educational quizzes, the school not only raises awareness about Fairtrade but also instills values of social responsibility and global citizenship in its students.
