A GP has admitted to a shocking conspiracy to murder his mother’s longtime partner by posing as a community nurse and administering a deadly fake Covid booster jab. Dr Thomas Kwan, 53, faced trial at Newcastle Crown Court where he changed his plea to guilty after initially denying attempted murder. Investigators initially believed Kwan used ricin in his attempt to kill Patrick O’Hara, 72, at his mother’s home in Newcastle. However, an expert later suggested a pesticide was the likely poison used.
The incident involving Kwan sparked a massive emergency response when hazardous chemicals were discovered in his garage at his residence in Ingleby Barwick, Teesside. The doctor had already admitted to administering a harmful substance, claiming he only intended to cause mild discomfort. Peter Makepeace KC, leading the prosecution, revealed that Kwan devised a complex plan to kill O’Hara, who had no history of conflict with Kwan but posed a potential obstacle to Kwan inheriting his mother’s estate. Kwan disguised himself as a community nurse, visited O’Hara’s residence, and administered the lethal substance under the guise of a Covid booster shot.
Kwan forged NHS documents for the home visit, used false identities for transportation, and booked a hotel under a fake name. His mother’s decision to include O’Hara in her will caused strain in her relationship with Kwan, who was described as “money-obsessed” and had even installed spyware on her laptop to monitor her finances. Kwan tricked O’Hara into believing he was a nurse offering a legitimate home visit, leading to the injection that resulted in severe complications for O’Hara.
After the injection, O’Hara experienced extreme pain and developed necrotising fasciitis, leading to the amputation of part of his arm and a lengthy stay in intensive care. Police identified Kwan as the suspect through CCTV footage and discovered dangerous substances in his home, including ricin ingredients. The court heard expert testimony that suggested a pesticide, iodomethane, was likely used.
Mrs Justice Lambert deferred sentencing to allow the Probation Service to evaluate the threat Kwan poses to society. Despite the defence’s claims, the prosecution maintained that greed motivated the crime. Mrs Justice Lambert warned Kwan of a significant prison sentence, with the defence acknowledging the inevitable outcome. The sentencing is scheduled for the following week.
