Millions of train passengers in the UK are set to experience Christmas travel chaos as major engineering works disrupt key rail routes to and from London during the upcoming festive season. The closures are expected to impact travellers planning journeys on intercity lines, including the closure of important London stations.
This year, the Christmas period is anticipated to face challenges as essential engineering work, including the controversial HS2 project, will necessitate the closure of London Paddington station for a six-day period. Some trains from Wales and Cornwall will be redirected to London Euston, increasing pressure on the already congested station.
Euston will also serve as a crucial hub for passengers travelling to Leicester, Nottingham, Derby, and Sheffield, with the line north of London St Pancras International set to be closed for nine days for bridge repairs. During this time, alternative travel arrangements will be in place for affected passengers.
Helen Hamlin, Network Rail’s director of system operations, explained that the holiday season presents a unique opportunity to carry out significant improvement works on the railways, with fewer travellers during this period. The planned projects aim to enhance services and reliability for passengers in the future.
The extensive works involve the renewal of points, bridges, signalling cables, and level crossings, alongside drainage projects to prevent disruptions caused by flooding. Among the most impacted routes are the Midland main line and the Great Western line, with alternative travel options and arrangements being put in place to minimise inconvenience.
Train services on the West Coast main line will also see disruptions, with closures anticipated at Crewe during the Christmas period. Passengers are advised to plan ahead and consider alternative travel options, as some routes will experience reduced services or diversions due to the engineering works.
As the holiday season approaches, travellers are urged to stay informed about the closures and plan their journeys accordingly to avoid disruptions and ensure a smooth travel experience during this busy period.
